YAZOO CITY, MS — Commissioner Willie Simmons, Central Transportation District, announces updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in western Mississippi.

“It’s great to see so many infrastructure improvement projects nearing completion in my home region,” Simmons said. “Each of these projects show a vital investment into our infrastructure that will make Mississippi a better place to live and work.”

U.S. 82 Greenville Bypass Construction Continues
Crews are making headway on the construction of approximately nine miles of four-lane highway known as the U.S. 82 Greenville Bypass from State Route 1 to Leland. Work began on the project last year. Two bridges have been completed and traffic has shifted onto the recently opened Old U.S. 61 bridge. Half of the project now has two lifts of asphalt. Nearly two million cubic yards of borrow material has been placed. The $137 million contract was awarded to Eutaw Construction of Madison. Work is on track to be completed fall 2025.
Interstate 55 Overlay Continues in Copiah County
A mill and overlay of 11 miles of I-55 from the Lincoln County line to Hazlehurst continues in Copiah County. Crews have completed all clearing operations and over half of the mainline paving work. Crews are currently paving open-graded friction course lift toward the southern limits of the project. Slides that formed since the project began are also being repaired. The $16.1 million contract was awarded to W.E. Blain & Sons of Mount Olive. Remaining work is now anticipated to be completed this fall.
State Route 822/Old U.S. 80 Mill and Overlay Nears Completion in Warren County
A mill and overlay of State Route 822/Old U.S. 80 from the beginning of state maintenance to Beechwood is nearing completion. Crews have completed all milling and paving operations and finishing up guardrail repairs and permanent striping. The $2.3 million contract was awarded to APAC-Mississippi of Jackson. Remaining work is expected to wrap up by the end of the summer.
State Route 18 Bridge Replacement Underway in Copiah County
A bridge replacement project on State Route 18 between the Claiborne and Hinds County lines is making headway in Copiah County. Crews have placed traffic onto the detour and are now building box culverts under the mainline. The $4.9 million contract was awarded to Joe McGee Construction Company of Lake. Work is anticipated to be completed by spring 2024.
Mill and Overlay of I-55 Makes Progress in Holmes County
A mill and overlay of 22 miles of I-55 from half a mile north of State Route 17 to the Carroll County line continues in Holmes County. Crews have completed partial clearing of trees along the interstate, and milled and paved the first lift of asphalt for six miles on the southern end of the project. The $39 million project was awarded to APAC-Mississippi. Work is estimated to be completed during summer 2024.
State Route 27 Bridge Replacement Continues Over the Big Black River
A bridge replacement project on SR 27 is making headway over the Big Black River in Hinds County. All bents have been poured and steel girders are being assembled. Clearing operations are complete and borrow material is being hauled to construct the new alignment. The nearly $20 million contract was awarded to Key, LLC of Madison. Work is expected to wrap up spring 2024.
State Route 28 Overlay Wraps Up in Jefferson County
An overlay of State Route 28 from State Route 33 to 2.4 miles east of Dennis Cross Road was recently completed. The $4.7 million contract was awarded to APAC-Mississippi.
U.S. 82 Overlay Wraps Up in Sunflower County
A mill and overlay of U.S. 82 from U.S. 61 to Indianola has been completed. The $8.7 million contract was awarded to APAC-Mississippi.
U.S. Highway 51 Mill and Overlay Complete in Copiah County
A mill and overlay of 13.5 miles of U.S. Highway 51 from the Lincoln County line to south of State Route 28 in Copiah County has been completed. The $5 million project was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc. of Jackson.
